Weird Al Says Elton John’s ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ Changed His Life
Master of parody, Weird Al Yankovic, obviously takes inspiration from other artists. But what is the music that changed his life?
In the upcoming book Rock Stars on the Record: The Albums That Changed Their Lives, Yankovic says that Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was a huge life-changer.
The “Smells Like Nirvana” singer says that, at age 14, this was the first “contemporary rock album” he bought and had previously only bought classical and comedy albums.
On why he felt connected to Elton, Weird Al says, “I probably gravitated toward Elton because he played the piano, and since I played the accordion—the right half of which is a piano keyboard—it was fairly easy for me to emulate him.”
