Over the past 39 years, thousands of bands have come and gone as fans’ tastes change. But somehow Metallica has managed to remain popular through all of it — an achievement Lars Ulrich credits to “the way we connect with fans.”

However, the veteran drummer admits he and his bandmates haven’t done it alone; he thanks social media for helping them stay atop the wave of success. “I love social media,” Ulrich says. “I love the fact that you and I can sit here and do this. And to me, what rock and roll is is really just about connecting to other people. We just throw it all out there.”

As a result, Ulrich says he and his bandmates have never felt closer to fans than they do now. “The indoor stage of the last couple of years, playing in the round, with the snakepit, and the shows we’ve played in the last few years outdoors, it just feels like we’re connecting at a more intimate level than we ever have before,” he says. “So hopefully we’re just getting started.”

How many bands can you name that have been together longer than Metallica has? What’s Metallica’s greatest album?
