Scientists Baffled Over Voyager 1’s Mysterious Transmissions

As it was created to do, the Voyager 1 spacecraft has been sending data back to NASA officials — only the data it’s been sending has left scientists stumped.

According to NASA, the data that’s been transmitted from the spacecraft in recent days does not “reflect what’s actually happening onboard.” And after a check of Voyager 1’s systems revealed everything is in working order, scientists are dumbfounded as to what’s causing the problem, much less how to fix it, NASA officials say.

“Until the nature of the issue is better understood, the team cannot anticipate whether this might affect how long the spacecraft can collect and transmit science data,” reads a statement from NASA.
