Recording Registry Adds Albums By Janet Jackson, Nas, & More

25 recordings were added to the National Recording Registry this year.

The new additions include:

  • Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation 1814”
  • Kermit the Frog’s “The Rainbow Connection”
  • Marlo Thomas & Friends’ “Free to Be…You and Me”
  • Louis Armstrong’s 1938 rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In ”
  • Nas’ “Illmatic”
  • An 1878 Thomas Edison recording that is the oldest playable audio of an American voice.

The registry was developed in 2000 and is a collection of audio that is “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” and is at least ten years old.

So far there are 575 recordings in the registry, some are preserved by the copyright holders, the artists, or other archives, however, the ones that aren’t will be preserved by the Library of Congress.
