Nickelback are making their first public comments about a copyright lawsuit centered around their 2005 hit “Rockstar”.

The band is being sued by a musician named Kirk Johnston, who claims the band ripped off his band’s 2001 song of the same name.

But Nickelback says Johnston “failed to identify” any lyrical or melodic similarities between the two songs – or provide any evidence as to how Nickelback would have encountered it.

The band also points out that copyright law does not protect song titles or “the commonplace lyrical theme of imagining being a rock star”.

Does it sound like Johnston has a case here?  Do you ever daydream about being a rock star?
