A long-lost David Bowie album called Toy has finally gotten a proper commercial release.

The album was recorded in 2001, with a mix of new songs and older Bowie tunes re-recorded with his current band.  But the record label killed the album, leaving Toy stuck on the shelf for 20 years.

Now, it’s finally available as part of the new box set Brilliant Adventure, which compiles Bowie’s output from 1992 through 2001.

Don’t want to buy the whole box set?  Toy will get a standalone release in January, along with a multi-disc deluxe version called TOY:BOX.

Why are ‘lost’ albums so exciting?  Why wouldn’t a record label want to put out a new album from a legend like Bowie?
