Katie Couric famously filmed a colonoscopy in 2000 after losing her husband to colorectal cancer two years prior. And she was back filming another medical diagnostic test: a mammogram. Her doctor reminded her she had missed it last year, and then asked the cameras to stop rolling. That’s when she learned she had breast cancer. She shared the whole experience in an essay on her website called “Why NOT Me?

Katie wrote, every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. She said she is sharing her story as we approach October which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to encourage women to get their mammograms.  She had a lumpectomy and the type she had doctors say isn’t likely to return, so she did not have to have chemo. She just finished a round of radiation.
