“Carry On Wayward Son” is Kansas’ signature hit and one of the most iconic songs in rock history. But the band says they didn’t want to record the song at first.

Guitarist Rich Williams says the band was already packing up for the studio and “didn’t want to learn any more music”, and thought “Oh crap!” when Kerry Livgren brought the new song to the band.

But Williams says once they heard it, they thought “Whoa! This has got some promise to it!” He says they “just barely learned” the song and headed straight to the studio to record it.

Would Kansas be a household name today if they never recorded “Carry On Wayward Son”?
