Dave Grohl Admits To Ripping Off Other Artists On ‘Nevermind’

While the 1991 Nirvana album Nevermind is widely considered to be groundbreaking, there’s at least one accomplished rocker who claims much of the disc is nothing more than a rip-off: former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.

The Foo Fighters frontman says he blatantly stole the drumming style he used in recording the album from some of disco’s top musicians. “I pulled so much of that stuff from The Gap band, Cameo and Tony Thompson on every one of those records,” Grohl says. “It’s all disco; that’s all it is.”

While Grohl’s admission my surprise some people, the artists he stole from aren’t among them. “I told Tony Thompson when he came to my house for a barbecue with somebody,” Grohl says. “I was like, ‘Look man, I just wanna thank you because, you know, I owe you so much –- I’ve been ripping you off my whole life.’ He goes, ‘I know.’ A big disco fill, it works every time.”

Do you think Grohl’s drum tracks sound like they were inspired by disco? Who’s the biggest rock thief of all time?
