40 Years Ago Today: The Go-Go’s Make History

40 years ago today, The Go-Go’s did something no one had ever done before – or has ever done since.
On April 6th, 1982, the band’s debut album Beauty and the Beat reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album charts, on the strength of singles like “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got The Beat”.
To this day, Beauty and the Beat is the only No. 1 album ever by an all-female band who wrote all the songs and played all the instruments.
Last year, the Go-Go’s were honored with a long-overdue spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Why haven’t we seen more all-female rock bands achieve the success of the Go-Go’s?
